PUNKS ON PAPER

North Carolina Punk Archive 1978-2022

About

Punks on Paper was, to quote the original site, "a comprehensive look back at the history of North Carolina Punk and Hardcore through detailed showlistings, flyers, posters, and ticket stubs."

It was lovingly maintained by John Rivera, who passed away in 2022. Thankfully, instead of disappearing forever, UNC-Greensboro's Digital Greensboro has taken over the collection and is maintaining not only the digital data, but is archiving the actual flyers.

While it's incredible that they are doing this, I wanted to bring back the same organization and browsability/discovery aspect of the original site. For example, you could go the Cat's Cradle page and scroll through to find shows you attended that you may have forgotten about. Or go to a city listing and see all the hole in the wall venues and houses you used to go to shows at.

My goal with this project is to bring back the spirit of the original site with some modernizations. First, I wanted to make the flyers the star of the site. The home page of the site features 3 random flyers from each city (hit refresh to see more!). When you go to a venue, you'll see a show listing featuring big previews of the flyers. On the individual show page, the flyers are large and the first thing you see.

On the technical side, this version of the site is mobile responsive and images are optimized for quick loading on mobile. There's a comprehensive search that returns results for bands, cities, venues, and shows. There's also direct URLs to get to all of those things, so you can send your friends a page dedicated to that Taking Back Sunday show at PS211 in 2002 where they were an opener. I've also linked every show to its corresponding Digital Greensboro record.

If you'd like to contribute a show flyer, or notice any issue with the data, please contact Digital Greensboro here.

This site is always a work in progress. If you notice any errors with this version of the collection (for example, it's correct on Digital Greensboro but I've imported it incorrectly) or have any suggestions, or notice any bugs, please contact me here or email me at sean@ashevillerock.com.
